 Tax preparation is the process of compiling, organizing, and submitting financial information to accurately calculate and file tax returns with governmental authorities. 

Tax Prep Checklist

 For Individuals

  • Personal Identification: Social Security numbers, previous year’s tax return, and dependent information.
  • Income Documents: W-2s, 1099s (miscellaneous, interest, dividend, retirement distributions), rental income, unemployment forms.
  • Deductions & Credits: Mortgage interest statements, student loan interest, property taxes, charitable donations, medical expenses, child care costs.
  • Retirement & Savings: Contributions to IRAs, 401(k)s, and other retirement accounts; documents for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or flexible spending accounts (FSAs).

Business or Side Income:

  •  If self-employed or freelancing, keep records of income, home office expenses, supplies, and mileage logs.
  • Income Records: Sales, invoices, 1099s from clients, rental income, and other revenue streams.
  • Expenses & Deductions: Office supplies, rent, utilities, internet, insurance, advertising, and employee payroll expenses.
  • Payroll Documentation: W-2s, W-3s, 941 forms, and any retirement plan contributions for staff.
  • Asset Records: Business property or equipment purchases, depreciation schedules, vehicle logs.
  • Tax Payments: Estimated tax payments, prior year overpayments applied to current year.
  • Accounting records: Bookkeeping records, reconciliation, bank statements
